Against the Death Penalty

If there is a profound controversial subject in this world, the one of the death penalty is at the top. Religions, philosophers, law enforcement agencies, science, governments, common people have different opinions.

The Roman Catholic Church, since about 20 years ago, opposes the death penalty. They believe that is not a detergent because the persons who are going to kill others will do it with or without  death penalty. They also look at the statistics showing that many injustices has been committed by states executing individuals that years later DNA demonstrates they were innocent. The Fifth Commandment states, "Don't Kill." Most of the people sentenced to death are poor; the rich can hire expensive lawyers who are brilliant and can save lives.

Those who oppose the death penalty argue that sometimes executions are cruel punishments because defective means of death. There are, according to the latest statistics, 14 states that don't have death penalty in the U.S. and 36 that do, including California. Although, those sentenced to death in CA spend about 15 or 17 years in prison before they are executed. "If a person kills another, and the state kills the perpetrator, what is the difference?" they allege. A Governor of a state that enforces the death penalty can spare the lives of convicted criminals.

In Favor of the Death Penalty

In the U.S., since 1977 through 2009, 1,188 people were executed  primarily by means of lethal injection. Most death penalty cases involve the execution of murderers although capital punishment can also be applied for treason, espionage, and other crimes.

Proponents of the death penalty say it is an important tool for preserving law and order, deters crime, and costs less than life imprisonment. They argue that retribution or "an eye for an eye" honors the victim, helps console grieving families, and ensures that the perpetrators of heinous crimes never have an opportunity to cause future tragedy.
